Equipment

NCFE - Unit 1

Equipment:

The following equipment is directly available to me and will be used throughout this study.

Nikon SLR D5000
Nikon Cool Pix S220

The above equipment has been selected for this study for several reasons.

Nikon D5000- This equipment has many benefits for an Action and Movement subject area. The ability to change aperture, ISO settings and shutter speed will allow me to capture high speed movement without the loss of quality in almost any environment.

Nikon Cool Pix S220 - The main benefit of this equipment is that it is easy to carry. This will be quite valuable whilst navigating around the mountain range of Soll, Austria where one of the shoots for this study will take place.

Initial Shots

The following shots have been taken at a local John Nike Leisure Sport complex using a Nikon SLR D5000.

Issues with first shots:

The first example shots are taken using the standard auto setting. Whilst this will, most of the time produce a reasonably clear image in most environments and lighting situations, the shutter speed is too slow for this type of photography. Photo 1 shows the result of a slow shutter speed. Whilst there are other iss
ues with this photo, the shutter speed is the reason why the subject matter is blurred.

Almost all of the shots I will be taking involve high speed subjects. This is simply due to the nature of the sport of snowbaording.

After reviewing the first few images I could see this would be a problem.
To try and resolve this problem I tried using the manual settings, enabling me full control of the shutter speed. The result of increasing the shutter speed is shown below in the next image.

Other problems with the first shots are generally to do with the lighting conditions. Another setting which can be controlled with this model of camera is the aperture setting. The result of this control can be seen in image 3. This is a much clearer image, though still far from perfect.

Health and Safety

Method Statement

Wherever photography work is undertaken for a client a method statement and risk assessment should be provided. Examples are provided below.

Instruction

C M Photography has been asked to carry out work for one evening by .

The work will be carried out by Mr Carl Morris.

The vehicle registration will be ST04 RUV and will be parked in designated staff parking areas.

The site contact number for the above personnel is 07849341197.

Works to be undertaken

A special event will be taking place on ................. C M Photography will be covering the event and will be responsible for taking photogaphs of every aspect. This will be achieved using a Nikon D5000 digital SLR camera. Due to the nature of work and speed of objects to be photographed it may be necessary to use tripods and support flashes.

All images will be subject to copyright of the client. Images will be provided in a digital format (.JPG) unless otherwise stated.

General Care Procedures / Hazards to Others and Action to be taken

Procedures.

a) Positioning of tripods.

b) Storing of equipment

Action.

a) All tripods will be positioned where they are least in the way whilst trying not to compromise the ability to capure high qualty images.

b) All equipment that is not kept with personnel will be stored in the company vehicle.

Potential Hazards and Action to be taken

Hazards:

a) Tripods/Photography equipment.

b) Moving subjects (snowboarders and skiers).

c) The client has not informed me of any other specific hazards.

Action:

a) Ensure that photography equipment is positioned wherever possible in positions that do not cause obstruction and if necessary marked with cones.

b) Due to the nature of snow sports high speed moving targets is to be expected. To avoid any collisions I will be wearing high visibility clothing at all times.

In addition to submitting the above Method Statement and Risk Assessment I would always work to the guidlines of the 'Health and Safety at Work Act 1974'. The main areas withink the act that concern me are those which I have covered already with my Risk Assessment. Wearing PPE when on site.

A common poster seen in the work place is shown below. This out lines the employers and employees responsibilities. For example as an employee you have the right to be provided with all necessary PPE free of charge.
